Recreation

Our Recreation Service provides activities and holidays for people with intellectual disabilities who:

  • access Alkira Training and Support Services. or
  • live in the Eastern Metropolitan Region and whose carers over the age of 65, or in the case of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, over the age of 45.

The Recreation Service operates:

  • 1 weeknight or afternoon per week
  • 1 day in the weekend per week
  • 3 holidays per year
  • Various weekend getaways throughout the year to meet the needs of specific groups of people.

Activities
Activities include pasta and DVD nights, cooking and craft activities, ten pin bowling, trips to sporting events, train trips, going to the movies, dinner at restaurants, visits to the theatre or circus, seasonal activities and events such as fishing and sailing in summer and a day at the Royal Melbourne Show in September.

The Recreation Calendar is changed every second month to provide variety and make sure people don’t miss out on what’s going on around Melbourne. People are required to pay in advance to secure a place.

Staff and volunteers are available to help with all activities, which provide fun, social connections and community involvement.

If something in a person’s My Plan includes a recreational activity, Alkira’s Recreation Service can organize it.

Holidays & Weekend Getaways
The Recreation Service generally organizes 3 holidays per year for up to 8 people in January, June and August when the Alkira Day Services are closed.

We also from time to time arrange other weekend getaways and holidays to meet the interests and needs of specific groups of people.

Alkira’s Mission: Alkira strives to meet the needs & wishes of people with intellectual disabilities through care and support to enrich and challenge them to be part of the world community.
